Today, Australians vote. This post is not about today, its about tomorrow.
Whichever side wins this referendum I hope the vilification and nastiness towards the ‘other side’ ends.
I have seen posts from people on both sides calling others awful names. I have seen posts from people on both sides stating, “if you don’t agree with me unfriend me now.” I have seen people from both sides stating they, “want to be on the right side of history.” People digging into positions, not discovering perspectives. All very reminiscent of social media posts during the last few US elections and until now unseen in Australia.
Referendums by their nature are Yes/No votes however, that is a long way from Right/Wrong. One of my Weirdsdom Principles is creating harmony with paradoxes and contradictions. It starts with a willingness to look beyond your stated positions of right/wrong, either/or and yes/no.
It’s simple but not easy. It will take commitment from all of us to move forward. I believe it is worth the effort because I want to live in a Diverse Australia NOT a divided one.
